King & R.J. King / Jenny Stanford publishing
"The deep change that Solar Decathlon started in architecture and building science lies in the methodology-the competition showcases everything that needs to be done in architecture and design to create adapted living spaces. The brilliant idea is to put together ten contests into one competition to evaluate ideas and concepts through a wide-angled design-build process. Students who have experienced that are transformed. Some of them have testified that they learned more in two years than during all their student life."

The constructive idea is the essential foundation of architectural design.
To learn how to design architecture, you need to learn how to build, while mastering geometric logics, proportions and shapes. Spatial thinking is based on a conceptual triangulation between matter, space and the sensory body... Nothing new there.
But the difficulty lies in learning to think in a complex way.
No classic binary reasoning, but at least ternary reasoning, or even quatrinary reasoning if the environment is taken into account as a subject in its own right (site, geography, climate...); and quinary reasoning if relations with biodiversity are taken into account.
This discussion is based on the constructive analysis of the Cathedral of Chartres (John James) and Florence’s Duomo (Massimo Ricci).

Progress of the construction site
Experimentation in the framework of educational workshops, research & development projects and professional projects is driving forward the whole field of city design and construction. Experimentation on the scale of the material, the constructive device, the building and the city is essential to advance on the path of environmental and social transition. It is also essential to ensure a livable environment in the medium and long term. A dive into spatial, everyday, sensitive and technical experimentation with materials.

Florence Lipsky's contribution to the collective work “Transformation of built situations” by CANAL architecture studio (pp. 72).
“We wanted to stick together… If you don't stick together in a situation like this, it doesn't work! This is what we did with the engineers left in the design team, who had to adapt, as the hazard occurred at an advanced stage, when cables had already been laid for the fluid networks, for example. In the same spirit, all reorganization decisions were taken in consultation with the governing authority, in a dialogue that was further strengthened by the multiplication of points to be settled. This principle applied first and foremost to our careful selection of a new structural engineering firm, which could only be a specialized in concrete repair, hence the choice of Euro Concept Ingénierie, a firm we know well. As far as the contractors were concerned, once Freyssinet had carried out the repairs, it was possible to organize a partial overlap of their respective interventions to save a little time.”

On september 23rd-2014, Florence Lipsky has defended her thesis work in front of a jury composed of Mr. Pierre VELTZ (USVQ), Antoine PICON (Prof. at GSD-Harvard University), Christophe GIROT (Prof. at ETHZ), Jean CASTEX (LéAV-ensaV), Jean-Yves MOLLIER (USVQ) and Benoit JACQUET (Prof. at Kyoto University. EFEO Director).
She received a "doctorate in Architecture" with high honors and the congratulations of the jury for her research work: "The campus as a specific territory and living environment in 21st century. Japanese case studies (19th-20th century)."
Summary:
Within the field of Architecture and Environmental Design, and by applying Foucault’s “heterotopia” concept, this work examines the campus as a space that is different from other spaces. According to its defining principles, the American campus is a reference for highlighting major themes: community engagement, questions of Town and Gown, and nature’s role in university life. This reflection, nourished by personal experiences and many years of professional practice in France, leads to the hypothesis that living on a campus is a spatial experience that contributes to an individual’s education, and therefore, must be fully understood on a human scale. The research develops a vision of university space design in the 21st century, based on the notion of environmental surroundings and beginning with territorial dynamics. An analysis of the Japanese campus helps support this reflection. History serves as a privileged tool for understanding how places were shaped at the time of Heian (794-1185), Meiji (1868-1912), and Heisei (1989-).
